Abstract:
Examines a number of nineteenth-century manuscript sources relating to the collection of antiquities of Redmond Anthony of Piltown, Co Kilkenny. It establishes the nature and extent of his collection of BA gold ornaments (lanulae, discs, ring money, bracelets, torcs, and brooches) and identifies previously unrecorded provenances for many pieces. It also provides an insight into the history and development of collections in the first half of the nineteenth century. Appendices provide a list of `Antiquities in bog oak box' (98--101), a `Simplified list of bog oak case contents' (102--3), and a `List of objects purchased from William Anthony by the British Museum in 1849' (103--9).
