Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Reports on archaeological investigations in 1997--98 on a site located in the south-western corner of the market place, in part of a former brewery. Remains of occupation spanning 800 years were encountered. Structures predating the brewery reflected the pattern of other properties in the village -- buildings around courtyard areas. Historical sources record that a fire devastated this area in 1748 and, although no trace was found in the excavations, it is possible that the earlier buildings may have been destroyed at that time. It is noted that the remains were to be preserved beneath the proposed development. | |||||
