A survey of the earthwork features which were mostly built between AD 1150 and 1500, though some imitation moats were made from the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries AD. All the sites included in the survey were square or rectangular in shape, and most appear to be single, which is considered to be indicative of a thirteenth or fourteenth century date. Their distribution varies with local topography and social conditions. | ||||||
