Abstract:
Excavation of a Romano-British temple abandoned in the third century and situated within a five-acre enclosure revealed a rich LIA--RB burial, possibly that of a Celtic chieftain turned client-king. Cow and horse bones along with the remains of three humans were found at the entrance to the enclosure, possibly sacrificial or votive offerings. Two pits beneath a central revetted turf stack produced evidence for the funerary rituals plus cremated ashes. Despite the effects of a funeral pyre, rich gravegoods were recovered, including an iron chainmail tunic, bridle bit with enamel inlay and enamelled bronzes, plus the remains of an iron-framed couch or chair with ivory mounts thought to be an Italian import.
