Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
The small baronial castles constitute a potentially rich body of archaeological data; documentary references are provided and 13th century remains have been sought in the field, resulting in forty-two sites being listed from Counties Sligo, Roscommon, Mayo, and Galway. They merit thorough survey and analysis. The 'standard' type is a free-standing keep within a curtain wall. They were mainly built 1227-45; the next forty years see at least twenty notices of destruction of castles. Norman/native relationships were not always confrontational. | ||||
