Abstract:
Determined sieving of thirty-six samples from Anglian deposits in York produced no rat bones among the many species present: the hypothesis is that the Roman rat population died out (?loss of habitat) and another population of rats came in with the Scandinavians in 9th century. House mouse was continuously present in York from 2nd to 20th century, however.
