Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Examines the origins and construction (in 1856--57) of the People's Park in Waterford City based largely on contemporary newspaper records, the surviving plan for the proposed park (dated 1855) and photographs of c 1900. Details are also provided of the acquisition of two Russian cannons captured at the siege of Sebastopol (1854--55) during the Crimean War and which were presented to the park as war trophies in 1857. Some newspaper reports are reproduced in the text of the article and in two appendices - `Appendix 1. Explanatory report, accompanying the design for the design of the united arrangement of the court-house and the public park grounds belonging to the city of Waterford' (137--9) and `Appendix 2. Statement of accounts of public park committee' (139--41). | |||
