Abstract:		 Reports on the excavation of a substantial Roman villa, on the east bank of the river Medway. Eight phases of Roman occupation are identified, ranging from AD 130--175 to AD 275--325, although evidence of earlier residual material was also recovered. The first evidence of habitation is an aisled building, dating to AD 175--225, to the north of which was located a sunken hexagonal feature, interpreted as a water basin or fountain. The later masonry villa was symmetrical, with colonnaded corridors or porticoes on its east and west sides in the `winged corridor' style. It has an attached bath suite to the north west interpreted as being an integrated part of the original structure. Towards the end of its occupation buttresses were added to support parts of the main building, indicating that the wings of the building were at least two floors high. Includes:
