Abstract:
Two parallel linear ditches, running for more than 100m, associated with smaller ditches and gullies are interpreted as a droveway with attached settlement. It is dated by associated pottery and radiocarbon to the LBA. The site provides the first good evidence for large-scale land division of this period in west Kent. It is suggested that the settlement was an arable counterpart to specialised transhumant pastoralism on higher and lower ground. There are specialist reports on: `Charred plant remains' by Mark Robinson (384); `Prehistoric pottery' by Alistair Barclay (385--93); `Medieval pottery' by Catherine Underwood-Keevill (394); `Struck flint' by Philippa Bradley (394--9); `Worked stone' by Fiona Roe (399--400); and `Radiocarbon dates' by Andrew Mudd (400--1).
