A watching brief and small-scale excavation on the route of a new gas pipeline indicated the existence of a substantial Romano-British settlement. It has been suggested that this could be the Roman town of Durolevum. Pottery has identified two main phases of occupation: from the beginning of the Roman period through to the middle of the second century; and from 270 AD onwards. No definite structural remains have been identified, but roof, floor and box-flue tiles were all recovered. The faunal remains consisted primarily of cattle and sheep (totalling 90%).
