Abstract:
Report on the excavation of a site in central Maidstone, which provided evidence of occupation from prehistoric times through to the nineteenth century. In particular, Iron Age and `Belgic' pottery was recovered, some in association with Roman burials and a timber structure; however the evidence suggests that most of the area was open land during the Iron Age and early Roman period. Evidence of occupation ceased between the end of the Roman period and the medieval period, when various features were indicated dating mainly to the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. The site at this time was being used for waste disposal. The finds assemblage reflects Maidstone's development by the thirteenth century into a market town, a trend which continued into the post-medieval period. An unexpected find was an apparently isolated post-medieval burial, the remains being contained in a wooden coffin which also contained a wooden vessel believed to have contained salt. The development of properties, and establishment of alleys and lanes in the area of the site, continued through the post-medieval period including the construction of Fremlin's Brewery in 1790. Finds indicate the existence of a local clay pipe industry and pharmaceutical dispensary.
