Report on an excavation carried out in 2001 at South Willesborough, Ashford, following a field evaluation in advance of development. The excavation showed a human presence in the area during much of prehistory, lithic material showing a range of technological styles from the Mesolithic/Early Neolithic through to the Middle Bronze Age and after, although no features dating to these periods were indicated. Greater levels of activity were evident by the Middle Iron Age, including evidence of charcoal-rich pits, some of which may have been sunken hearths or ovens. The evidence from all these periods suggests temporary camps associated with hunting or herding rather than permanent settlement. A Mid- to Late Iron Age cremation was found, apparently isolated and without grave goods. A concentration of pottery may represent a second cremation. A group of features radiocarbon dated to the early to mid-Saxon period were interpreted as hearths. Includes | |||||||||||||||||||||||||
