TQ 71757421. Excavations verified that a row of cottages being demolished at Abbey Farm, Higham, contained medieval work which was part of the W range of a small Benedictine house of nuns. The position and dimensions were established of the small cruciform church, and the E range containing the chapter-house and warming-house; the probable dimensions of the refectory in the S range and further internal details of the W range were also obtained. All were set round a small cloister. The reredorter and its drain extended eastwards from an angle of the E range. Architectural evidence suggested a mid-12th cent origin, and building continued well into 13th cent. Finds of bricks, roof-tiles and decorated floor-tiles supported this dating and extended it into early 14th cent. A stone coffin and its decorated lid is of mid-12th cent date; it contained the remains of two individuals. LASB | ||||||
