TQ 46786758. Results of excavation up to autumn 1966 suggest that this cemetery was in use from c AD 450-550. Work has so far revealed sixteen cremations and twenty-nine inhumations, so thoroughly interspersed as to suggest that the two rites were practised contemporaneously. Most of the inhumations were furnished, and lay with heads to W, but a few lay with heads to S. Two of the cremation urns are datable to mid-5th cent, as is also a rare stamped glass armlet which has other parallels from SE England. Evidence of RB occupation from late 1st to 4th cent was also discovered including a flint spread which may have been the metalling of a yard. The cemetery is related to the small group of Kentish cemeteries lying on or near the S side of the Thames, and to the mixed cemeteries of Surrey. The presence of early material at Orpington, which lies west of the river Cray, lessens the likelihood that the Cray valley dyke was an early Saxon defence. Excavation continues. LEW | ||||||||||
