Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Willis' plan of the Anglo-Saxon cathedral relies heavily on Eadmer's account of the rebuilding which is, for various reasons, open to more than one interpretation. A fully basilican form cannot be assumed from Eadmer's text, nor is it possible to show any such in other Anglo-Saxon churches. Silchester, even if it was a Christian church, is not necessarily typical and cannot be cited in support of Willis. From our knowledge of Kentish Anglo-Saxon practice we might expect a normal 7th century church with nave flanked by simple porticus, separated by a triple arcade from a stilted apse, as in the early phase at St Pancras, Canterbury. Plans derived from possible interpretations of Eadmer's text in this light are proposed and discussed. The scale of the preferred interpretation is not inappropriate to the Primate's church and the seat of St Dunstan. | |||||||
