Abstract:
The evidence - structural and otherwise - for Lanfranc's cathedral is reviewed in detail and feature by feature. Elements which seem to represent a divergence from early Norman building practice are regarded as archaisms, potential survivals from the Anglo-Saxon cathedral or from the late Saxon style in general. A new hypothetical plan is proposed, with a straight east end, straight-ended transeptal chapels, tower piers not aligned with the transepts, and a west porch; evidence for the last is found in the cathedral seal of c 1130. The lower part of the west wall of Ernulf's crypt is identified as Anglo-Saxon and the raised flooring above in the central tower is regarded as perpetuating an extensive Anglo-Saxon podium in the same position.
