[TQ 542658]. See abstract 72/1769. Vain search for the earliest entrance showed that the castle was sited on a natural islet in the river floodplain, using a river meander (subsequently channelled) as a ditch and mounding-up within. The early 12th century bridge was framed on transverse beams, plus a row of earthfast posts to take the weight of the lifting bridge. Crossbeams were butted in to form a rectangular frame, with transverse reinforcement. One upright frame sheathed in planking was found where it had been overturned about 1270 to form a base for one of two stone abutments which reduced the gap to be bridged. Finds included a good series of complete cooking-pot profiles. D F R | |||||||||||
