Confirmation has been found of Urry's suggestion that Bell Harry Tower was built in two distinct stages. The four east-west tie beams of late 15th/early 16th century, lying 50ft below the tower parapet, were finished with a camber as for a roof, not a floor this represents a lantern completed in 1493. Later the cambered beams were rebated to take floor joists when the decision was made to take the tower higher. There are also two sizes of brick used in the tower, divided by a string course. The SE spire, which postdates the fire of 1174, contains secret notched lap joints which, taken with those at Cogan House also in Canterbury, may predate those of 1213 at Wells. | ||||||
