Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Challenges the emphasis which field archaeology places on chronology and settlement dynamics at the expense of other, equally valid, subjects. Working on the assumption that most field archaeologists see artefacts as a way of confirming and calibrating their stratigraphic sequences and interrelationships and that ecofact studies are regarded as providing clues as to what the inhabitants of a given site were eating when they were not digging holes, two finds analysts register their dissent from these views.~The second theme is the current institutional framework within which archaeological field work is conceived, planned, and executed. This does not allow artefact and ecofact analysts sufficient contribution to the processes of research design, detailed planning, and the establishment of practice in the field to maximise the possibilities offered by recent theoretical and methodological advances. | |||
