Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Catalogue of mainly unpublished material for which the name coined by J Hawkes in 1938 is retained, though it was long ago shown to embrace two distinct types of pottery. These are the Style du Castellic, with roots in the Chassey style of the Morbihan, and the Style de Groh-Collé which is exclusively coastal in distribution. A third, intrusive Style Conguel is also defined. No relation with Iberian symbolic art can be upheld; some Castellic motifs may have been taken from Atlantic megalithic art (cf Gavrinis) but in the other two wares symbol turns to ornament and disappears. Resemblances between Beacharra and ErLannic wares are puzzling unless sheerly fortuitous. | |||||
