The 1964 cutting through the NE colonia wall confirmed the existence (suggested by the 1961 trench through the SW wall) of a military-style rampart of clay, turf and gravel, 24 ft wide, underlying the colonia defences. Claudian flagon necks were stratified within the rampart. Three sides of the perimeter are now established and the area enclosed, 48 acres, indicates a legionary fortress. This had previously been thought to lie at Kingsholm, N of Gloucester City, but the military remains thence now seem to relate to an auxiliary fort, perhaps also to the legionary work-camp for the construction of the fortress. The legion concerned would be Leg XX, transferred from Colchester; the auxiliary unit at Kingsholm may have been Coh VI Thracians, judging by the trooper's tombstone at Wotton. The rampart, which in this rather marshy section was based on corduroy timbers, had been cut by the later (robbed) town wall, elsewhere in the city dated to the end of 2nd century. Nine Samian pieces recovered unstratified ranged from Neronian/early Flavian to late Antonine in date; seven Glevum ware sherds included one of rare form. | ||||||||||||
