SP 108285. A Wessex-type bell barrow in N Cotswolds had a complex structure containing secondary burials of MBA period and some intrusions of historic times. The primary burial, a cremation without grave-goods, had been placed in a pit and covered by a turf mound. Stakes surrounded the turf core, which was capped with stones and encircled by a wide clay bank with outer stone revetment. Several satellite cremations were added as the mound was still further enlarged. A berm was cleared and an encircling ditch cut into the rock. During MBA five cremations in cinerary urns, some with accessory vessels, were inserted into the SE quadrant; the urns were mostly biconical Wessex forms with fingertip ornament. Subsequent interest in the mound is evidenced by Roman coins and pottery, an AS sceatta and a partly-robbed ?Saxon grave containing two stone gaming-boards. Finally a shepherd's cot was inserted into the barrow. Finds include worked flints and a fragment of polished stone axe (Group VI). | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
