Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Excavation before and during road-widening suggested the existence of a mutatio (posting-house) and other buildings bordering the Fosse Way; other evidence for the Roman settlement, collected over a period of years, is discussed in detail. The site is fifteen miles from Corinium, beside a ford near the large native settlement of Salmonsbury. The following buildings have been provisionally identified: a "wayside shrine" - part of a ?circular building; a bakehouse with two domestic ovens, in use into 4th or even 5th cent; a "transport cafe" (a building with much animal bone refuse and a hearth); and a stable and yard with forge and oven. The position of the Roman Fosse Way was confirmed, and a cross street opposite the posting-house entrance was found. At the ford are a paved way and the piers of a footbridge. Coin-finds from Bourton run from 88 BC to Honorius. Small finds and pottery will be described in a later report. | |||||||||||
