Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
In continuation of the grain storage experiments previously reported (abstract 68/187), a large and a small pit were prepared and filled with grain; neither pit was lined, and carbon dioxide readings were taken fortnightly from the large pit. During January the large pit was opened for the extraction of 3cwt grain and then resealed until March when the experiment was concluded. It was then found that a rat had burrowed into the pit, allowing water to seep in and ruin a fifth of the grain; the remainder was usable but infertile. The grain in the smaller pit was found to be in perfect condition, giving 70% germination. The grain nearest the pit sides forms a protective "wall" about 2in thick, and while this remains unbroken, opening and resealing in wintry conditions does no harm. The pits had not become sour after two seasons use. | ||||||
