[SO 8729]. The earliest church structure at Deerhurst identified by the author is provisionally equated with a Severnside monastery founded by St Germanus and later associated with St Samson of Dol. The comparison of its fabric with other "early rectangular churches" previously published by the author is reargued with additional evidence, and an origin for the type in 5th-century Brittany postulated. To the list of NW French examples is added Les Maselles, Thésée. An addendum takes note of Rahtz 1971 (see abstract 72/1740). D P
