Abstract:
The earliest prehistoric evidence for dogs in Ireland arose at Dalkey Island, Co Dublin, on a 5000--4000 BC rubbish heap. Canine remains regularly occurred on Neolithic sites including New Grange. Size differentiation between possible types can first be seen in remains found in the `man--made' ritual pool at King's Stables, Navan fort. In the Early Christian period skeletal evidence backs up historical accounts of varying breeds.
