Abstract:
Rescue excavations at Raffin Fort, Co Meath, show that the site shares many features of major `royal' sites such as Tara and Emhain Macha (Navan Fort) though it would have served a much smaller political unit. It is also unique in having a contemporary ritual burial monument. The site shows three phases of use, a Neolithic habitation and LBA and IA ceremonial buildings. Includes a note on `The [Celtic] cult of the human head' (22) exemplified by the find of part of a human skull ritually deposited in a pit and marked by a short standing stone. The find is likened to a similar bone deposit in an artificial lake at the King's Stables, Co Armagh, a part of the Navan Fort complex.
