Abstract:
Excavations conducted by the author at the castle in 1991 and the examination of late nineteenth-century cartographic evidence have allowed for a reappraisal of earlier archaeological work carried out at the site by David Sweetman in 1976. Contends that traces of a large oblong building within the castle's courtyard was not a late thirteenth-century hall as suggested by Sweetman but rather a barracks built in the eighteenth century (see also 97/835).
