Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Postulates that a triangular stone depicted in front of the entrance to Newgrange passage tomb in a survey by Major Charles Vallancey published in 1776 might indeed have existed despite Vallancey's reputation as a member of the `lunatic fringe' of antiquarians. The stone is no longer extant and no other record of it appears to exist. However, following a consideration of Vallancey's skill and career as a surveyor, an `enigmatic' trench recorded in front of the entrance to the tomb in excavations carried out in the 1960s is now interpreted as the possible socket for this triangular stone. Two similar stones are also present along the kerb of Cairn D at Loughcrew and these may point to the entrances to an otherwise unknown passage at this site. Closes by suggesting that the erection of a reproduction stone at Newgrange could assist in investigating any astronomical significance it might have had to the tomb builders. | |||
