Abstract:
Reports the discovery of a sheela-na-gig from under Kilcumber Bridge which spans the River Figile near Clonbulloge, Co Offaly. The find, which is carved on a probably late medieval quoin stone, is described and placed in the context of other sheela-na-gigs. Concludes that while their origin may lie in the acrobatic and exhibitionist carvings of western European churches of the Romanesque period, Irish examples are more frequently found in the external walls of late medieval tower houses and may have been intended to ward off evil. Additional pieces of dressed stone from the River Figile suggests that the sheela-na-gig may have been displayed on the wall of a nearby, but otherwise unknown, medieval building.
