Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Considers the archaeological and documentary evidence for extensive trading and other contacts between Ireland and the Roman Empire. The impact of the Irish on Roman Britain in the third and fourth centuries AD is particularly emphasised, including the building of walled bases and towns in southern Wales in response to attacks by Irish raiders, the presence of hoards of Roman coins and silver in Ireland (either loot or pay for mercenary service in Rome's armies), references to Romans as slaves in Ireland (such as St Patrick), and the settlement in Wales of Roman client tribes from Ireland to form a buffer zone against the western barbarians in the fourth/early fifth centuries (indicated by place-name evidence and the presence of ogham stones). Suggests that the Roman temple at Lydney, Gloucestershire, originated from the worship of the Irish god Nodens and wonders if this temple and that at nearby Bath (dedicated to the Celtic goddess Sulis) represents the centre of a water-healing cult to which the Irish travelled. | ||||||||
