Abstract:
This detached supplement comprises reviews of recently established visitor centres and material for use in classrooms at the Junior Certificate level in Ireland. Una MacConville (S1--S2, S4) begins the supplement with `Can the centres hold?', a review of three interpretative centres - The Navan Centre (Co Armagh), Celtworld (Co Waterford) and Céide Fields (Co Mayo). The value of each centre for school trips is emphasised including a note on the educational packs published by these and other centres in Ireland. Second-year Junior Certificate pupil Aoife Maxwell (S4) supplies `A student's view', comparing and contrasting The Navan Centre with Celtworld. She concludes that while The Navan Centre is more educational, Celtworld is more fun to visit. Cormac Bourke (S6--S7) describes, in `Patrick: life and legacy', an exhibition held at the Ulster Museum on the quindecimcentenary of the death of Ireland's patron saint. In `Letters, lines and Celtic designs', Tim O'Neill (S10--S11, S13) provides a fictional treatment of what it was like for a boy to be educated in an early Irish monastery. Alan MacShamhrain (S14--S15) concludes the supplement with a look at Irish ecclesiastical toponymy in `Placenames and archaeology'.
