Abstract:		 Includes short reports on the following: the establishment of a new heritage policy unit within the Irish Ministry for Arts, Culture & the Gaeltacht taking functions from the OPW; the discovery of bones of the extinct giant deer (Megaloceros giganteus) in Cork city; the establishment of a Museums Council for Northern Ireland; a summary of the 1993 Roscrea conference on Early Christian and medieval relics, reliquaries etc; a proposed Northern Ireland register of shipwrecks and other offshore sites; an Irish Supreme Court judgement (May 1993) requiring the OPW to obtain planning permission for its proposed interpretative centres at Mullaghmore (Co Clare) and Luggala (Co Wicklow); archaeological monitoring and excavation of three deep trenches in Tuam (Co Galway) (features found included old cobbled surfaces, a market area, and an eighteenth- to nineteenth-century pottery kiln); a note on excavation of a thirteenth-century mural tower and associated town wall in Dublin, considering the issue of whether to backfill or display the structure; and the start of an Irish Admiralty Court case examining salvage rights in relation to three Armada wrecks off Streedagh Strand, Co Sligo.
