The abstract describing the content of the publication or report
Abstract:		 Reviews the first year of the North Munster Project which is being carried out by the Discovery Programme to increase knowledge of the first millennium BC in Ireland -- the period of the Bronze Age/Iron Age transition. Focusing on the lower basin of the River Shannon, the project is concentrating on hillforts (many newly discovered by aerial photography), metal artefacts, and linear earthworks (some of which have been dated to the first few centuries BC). Together, these are seen as evidence of a tendency towards political centralisation and territorial formalisation. Attention is also given to the search for burials, habitation sites, and field systems, as well as the survey of intertidal wetlands along the Co Clare coastline and in the Fergus and Shannon estuaries (see also 96/220 & 96/542). All the data will be processed through a geographic information system.
