Abstract:		 While most Irish henges appear to lack a ditch, one site known as Dún Ruadh (in Crouck, Co Tyrone) forms an exception to the rule. Though heavily disturbed by quarrying of its stone cairn in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and partly excavated in 1935--36, a small archaeological cutting was made through the best-preserved part of the site's bank and ditch in 1987. Palynological evidence was acquired of the site's environmental history, while radiocarbon dates were obtained for charcoal from the primary fill of the ditch and for charcoal from a double cremation burial in a cist cut into the bank. An earlier two-phase hypothesis of the site's development was confirmed by both dates and the palynological evidence. Concludes by placing this EBA monument in the context of another category of Irish earthwork enclosure composed of an external bank and internal ditch -- the `royal' sites of Rathcroghan, Tara, Dún Ailinne, and Navan.
