Abstract:		 Report of the first annual symposium on medieval Dublin held in April 1993. The symposium was held to allow excavators to communicate new findings in excavations carried out in the city between 1991 and 1993. Various matters were discussed including a reconstruction of the topography and evolution of Dublin from mainly cartographic records, the nearly ubiquitous presence of a layer of earth generally interpreted as a `garden soil' (though its origin is unknown), the emergency response to a development project resulting in the fragmentary retrieval of data from small test trenches, the apparent variation in responses to archaeological disturbance by archaeological authorities in the city, and concern over whether the recent excavations could be published or not. Argues that the lack of a successful archaeological policy of preservation and excavation in the city leaves both archaeologists and historians confused and allows developers to treat Dublin's archaeological heritage with contempt.
