Abstract:
Plans to reflood the moat at the Tower of London have led to a major excavation programme. This has revealed considerable information about the evolution of the medieval defences. Three major periods of development can be identified: the creation of a water-filled feature between 1275 and 1281; the construction of a brick revetment wall between 1670 and 1683; and filling of the moat in 1845. Traces of earlier work dating to the reign of Henry II were also noted. The lower levels of the moat contained a good sequence of environmental material but few artefacts -- one of which was an entire fifteenth-century wickerwork fish trap.
