Abstract:
The author's research on the Pictish, Viking and Late Norse periods, especially in Orkney, is summarised. Sites excavated include pre-Viking and Viking settlement sites on the Brough of Birsay; a stone chapel with a possible Norse timber structure beneath it at Deerness; and a Viking age settlement at Freswick Links, Caithness. The results of the project are placed in the overall context of North Atlantic Viking archaeology.
