Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
Dredging of the River Blackwater and subsequent examination of the silts revealed several finds of considerable interest. In addition to numerous Bronze Age weapons and a few items of Iron Age date, an early Christian house shrine, a Viking metalworker's hoard and a medieval hanging bowl were found. The house shrine is thoroughly Celtic in style with none of the animals or interlace work characteristic of later work. It is therefore dated to c AD 600 and is thus the earliest known example of Early Christian art in Ireland. | |||||||||
