The original defences of c AD 79, and the rebuilt interior of late 80s/9Os, were cleared c 105 for another timber fort, itself rebuilt in second half of 2nd century, finally receiving stone defences. Legionary detachments formed the garrison. Stables outside the fort were demolished in 105. There is good survival of organic materials including equipment. It was a civil community from the first, providing shops and crafts. Full military occupation ceased c 320-30. By the Cathedral there is late Roman material, 'Dark Earth', and a Late Saxon cemetery in three phases. | |||||||
