Abstract:
The 3000m2 site near Winchester's centre contains two substantial Roman town houses and the medieval house of John de Tytynge (wool merchant and mayor, in occupation 1299-1312); subsequent owners were also in the textile business. Two separate earlier buildings were incorporated into de Tytynge's house; a late 14th century garderobe pit was especially informative, with evidence of a high-status diet and Saintonge wares. Elsewhere on The Brooks was an early 15th century fuller's workshop.
