Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
In the third and final season's work on this deserted medieval village, Croft 53 was excavated but failed to reveal continuity between its several periods of use. After slight Roman occupation there was a break until mid-12th century, when six main structural phases followed until mid-15th century; there was then another break before Rectory Farm was built in 1610. Faxton shows the now familiar DMV sequence -timber buildings first replaced in stone during 13th century, and the developing farmyard complex of special-purpose permanent buildings. Climatic and manorial conditions could explain the former at Faxton, and the farmyard complex seems to have developed from the gradual rebuilding in stone of the old temporary sheds. Many problems - organisational, procedural and particular - still confront students of DMVs, but Faxton shows that even rapid rescue work can add useful results. Except where documents allow the tracing of tenants of particular plots, however, a longish pause in DMV exploration might be advisable while attention is focused on sites where Roman-Saxon-Norman continuity may be found.
