Abstract:
The size and basic structural pattern of our Bronze Age circular huts has probably been completely misjudged in the past, with important repercussions on our EIA interpretations. In particular the BA houses set on hill slope platforms (eg Amberley Mount) are likely to be quite large houses whose outer walls rested on the scarp, not small huts set entirely within the platform. The trodden chalk area represents the main living portion within the post-ring, distinct from the less worn storage/sleeping area outside it. In this interpretation the normal diameter of a BA house is 30ft or more, and a long ancestry emerges for the double- and multi-ring EIA houses. Further, Little Woodbury I loses its uniqueness if reinterpreted as one house rebuilt once in its entirety; its central quartet of posts probably represents a granary of a quite separate phase. Five basic structural systems suitable for BA/EIA round houses are illustrated; there is an urgent need to seek ethnographic parallels and to decide on criteria for classification. A tailpiece discusses EIA houses at Whitton (Glamorgan) and Llandegai (Caernarvonshire).
