Abstract:
[TL 9925]. Excavation in the colonia since 1964 has revealed Claudian structures and equipment suggesting early military occupation. The W defences of the colonia showed an unusual sequence of stone wall preceding earthen bank by a fairly long interval; further confirmatory work is needed, but the wall may date from mid-2nd century. Excavation revealed details of the Gosbecks temple-theatre, in use until c AD 200. The Temple of Claudius lay some distance from the earliest focus of settlement; expansion of the town in late Flavian times may reflect an official closure of the old native site at Sheepen. Rescue excavation at Sheepen itself revealed large areas of metalworking (? natives under Roman control); this site was destroyed at the Boudiccan revolt. Massive redevelopment now threatens the centre of medieval Colchester.
