Abstract:
[SO 5040]. Recent excavation has revealed multi-phase Saxon town defences. The first rampart enclosed about fifty acres, with a subsequent (so far undated) addition of a further forty-three acres. The first-phase rampart of the eastern defences was of clay and branches, revetted with timber (Aethelfleda, c 914?). A stone wall was added in front, 2m thick and at least 2m high; the berm must be at least 2½m wide (Aethelstan, c 930?). Two phases of timber breastwork were seen, and after a period of collapse a further timber line marks a new refortification. Over all was the early medieval gravel bank (Harold Godwinson, after 1055?).
