Abstract:
Nearly forty hectares of land under threat from gravel extractions have been examined and major features of the Neolithic, Bronze Age and Roman period excavated. The earliest recorded feature was a Neolithic enclosure of trapezoidal plan which has an unparalleled arrangement of posts and ditch. The size and shape of the enclosure, together with ritual animal bone deposits found in the ditch, dated to 2925-2620 cal bc, suggest that it was a ceremonial centre, and a cursus ran from the enclosure in a parallel alignment to the south-west. A number of pits, ring ditches and a small enclosure of likely Bronze Age date were also found in the area, some associated with human burials. The Roman evidence may consist of a temple complex, with a series of ditched enclosures, one containing a cemetery of fifty five cremations in urns, and a possible shrine. Further excavations are planned.
