Abstract:		 Noting recent internal organisational changes, this article looks at the way planning and advisory work for registered parks and gardens is carried out, considering the criteria for the award of the first grants allocated for conservation and repair of gardens. Overlap with the Countryside Commission's Countryside Stewardship Scheme and EU initiatives under the Pilot Project for the Conservation of the European Architectural Heritage is also mentioned. Synopses of five schemes are presented: restoration of the parterre at Harewood House; replanting of lime avenues at Ham House and at Lyme Park; a survey of Prior Park; and various works at Farnborough Hall. Concludes by advising how to initiate a grant application.
