The Eleanor Cross in Geddington, Northamptonshire, recently conserved on behalf of English Heritage, is the most complete survivor of twelve crosses erected by Edward I in memory of his queen, Eleanor of Castile, who died in 1290. This article outlines the history behind the crosses and the conservation work that has been carried out over the last few centuries on the three surviving monuments, which are amongst the finest examples of the English Decorated Style. It goes on to describe the work that has been recently carried out on the Geddington cross, the overriding aim of which was to extend the life of the original fabric. LD | |
