It is argued that an international court ruling in favour of returning antiquities to their countries of origin would set a precedent detrimental to museum collections worldwide. In its current draft, the UNIDROIT convention (see 95/777) does not exclude retrospective claims. The double standards by which some claimant states view their heritage is also highlighted, with reference to the continuing destruction of archaeological remains in Turkey. | |
