After the find of a layer of stones with medieval pottery in 1981 at Bickley, Cleve, an area of trenches was excavated to determine the nature of the discovery. This revealed part of a small, mainly twelfth-century settlement. Two successive buildings, probably with walls of clay, timber, and wattle, were defined. The later building had the remains of an oven and ?hearth within and was probably a dwelling. The earlier may have been a stable or store. The occupation ceased at the steep slope to the south of the buildings but to the north there was evidence for cultivation possibly dating back to the tenth century. The evidence of large numbers of hones points to agricultural/woodland occupations for the inhabitants. Large amounts of pottery were recovered, enabling the site to be relatively closely dated, while the few metal objects included two copper alloy buckles and a unique iron stirrup.
